Prof.Japhet Killewo, is a Professor of Epidemiology at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS). He previously served as the District Medical Officer of Kibondo (1979 to 1980), the head of the Departments of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at MUHAS (1986 to 1997) and Program Manager of the MUHAS Programme Management Unit (1997 to 1999). In October 1999, after taking a sabbatical leave from MUHAS, Prof. Killewo became the head of the Reproductive Health Programme at ICDDR in Bangladesh. He returned to MUHAS in 2003 where he continues to teach and conduct research in various fields including HIV/AIDS and reproductive health. Prof Killewo has more than 70 published peer reviewed articles, 26 of which he is the first author. Topics of these publications include infectious disease epidemiology, environmental health, reproductive health, STIs and HIV/AIDS. He was also the Principal Investigator of the Kagera AIDS Research Project (KARP) which was the largest of its kind in 1987 and lasted for over 20 years with support from SIDA (SAREC). While in Bangladesh he worked in reproductive health research projects supported by EU and USAID and in the Reaching the Poor Program of the World Bank. Since 2011 he has been doing evaluative research in Maternal, Newborn and Child Health as well as Community Health Workers’ programmes with support from USAID.
